The Volterra Project Trio draws inspiration from European impressionism, Mediterranean folk melodies and cinematic scores to reimagine classical guitar trio music.
Antigoni Goni, an internationally celebrated Greek guitarist, is admired for her exquisite sound and distinguished solo and chamber career. Italian-born Luca Isolani, a researcher and performer with a deep focus on folk influences, bridges the worlds of classical, jazz, and contemporary music. Maarten Vandenbemden, a Belgian guitarist, arranger, and pedagogue, is lauded for his creative energy and commitment to education and outreach. As a trio, they merge their diverse expertise to breathe fresh life into the repertoire, treating the guitar as a miniature orchestra, exploring its unique sounds, dynamics, and colors.
In 2022, the trio released Medio Siglo, an album dedicated to the renowned luthier José Luis Romanillos, recorded using his last four guitars. The album has been praised in Soundboard Magazine for “the deep use of colors and the dazzling arrangements.”
In June 2023, the Volterra Project Trio made its US debut at the 50th Guitar Foundation of America Convention in New York, after playing extensively in Europe. Their new album, Parole in Musica, released in May 2025, will be followed by an international tour of both Europe and the USA.

Those of you who were fortunate enough to attend Rafael Aguirre sold-out concert two years ago will be delighted to hear that he is returning this year! We heard your requests for a return visit and have been collaborating with him to schedule his return, delayed a bit by great news for him---he has married his lovely fiancée, moved from his native Spain to Mexico and welcomed daughter Victoria to this world. We hope to make his visits a regular event now that he and his family live on this side of the ocean...

Elena Rivera began her university studies in Geosciences Engineering at the University of Sonora in Mexico, but her interest in music led her to simultaneously begin music classes. Upon completing her degree in Geosciences Engineering, she was motivated by her singing teacher to make a greater investment in her music studies.
She received a scholarship from the Government of Sonora to move to Spain and study at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid. During her first year there, she was invited to participate in the zarzuela El invitado del sevillano at the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao. This would be the first of many leading roles in European theatres. Upon completing her music program, she received the Lola Rodríguez Aragón award for being the most outstanding student of her generation.
She has performed lead roles in operas such as La Traviata, Rigoletto, Elixir of Love, Die Fledermaus, and Don Pasquale, among others. She has also performed in zarzuelas such as The Guest from Seville, The African Duet, The Barber of Lavapiés, and Marina, and she participated in the 150th anniversary concert at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in 2006. She shared the stage with tenor José Carreras in 2016 at the Pitic Festival in Hermosillo, Sonora.
She was nominated for the 2020 Latin Grammy in the category of Best Classical Music Album with the Latin American Quartet (Javier Montiel Llaguno, viola, and the brothers Bitrán Goren: cellist Álvaro, first violinist Saúl , and second violinist Arón) for their album The Juliet Letters (composer Elvis Costello). She also has recorded La Clementina by Luigi Boccherini conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado and Soles y brumas, with songs by Emiliana de Zubeldía accompanied by the Spanish pianist Jorge Robaina.
Joaquín Clerch is a classical guitarist and composer. He is a close friend and protégé of Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer, one of the defining influences on his career as a performer and a composer. Clerch’s composition “Yemaya” won first prize in both the 1987 National Cuban Composition Competition and the 1987 Toronto International Guitar Competition.
He was born in 1965 in Havana, studied guitar as a child with his first teacher Leopoldina Nuñez, and later went to study with renowned teachers including Leo Brouwer and Carlos Fariñas (composition). In 1990 he began his training in Salzburg where he studied the guitar with Eliot Fisk, early music with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Anthony Spiri, and contemporary music with Oswald Salaberger. He completed his studies with the highest award in 1991, receiving the prize which the Cultural Ministry of Austria grants to the best graduates. He won an Echo Klassik Award in 2009 with Anette Maiburg, and Pancho Amat for their recording Classica Cubana.
In 1999 Joaquín Clerch was appointed as a professor of guitar at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf. Eliot Fisk described Joaquín as the outstanding guitarist of his generation worldwide.

An era is ending! Longtime favorites of Tucson, Sérgio and Odair Assad have played Holsclaw Hall for many years, every fall. It was always a highlight of the guitar season. But they have been appearing together on stages around the world for over 50 years, and now the year has come when they will say goodbye to fans everywhere. We are so thankful that they have carved out two days to play in Tucson, back-to-back with friend and colleague David Russell. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to thank them and show our appreciation for their amazing contributions to music and to the lives of so many students and friends!

Solo Duo
Lorenzo Micheli & Matteo Mela, Classical Guitar

As SoloDuo, Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli have performed throughout around the world and have been acclaimed everywhere – from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall, from Kiev’s Hall of Columns to Vienna’s Konzerthaus – as one of the best ensembles ever heard. The Washington Post wrote: “the duo’s playing was nothing less than rapturous – profound and unforgettable musicianship of the highest order.”
In addition to classic, romantic and modern repertoire, Matteo and Lorenzo – joined by lutenist Massimo Lonardi – have extensively explored Italian music from the XVII and XVIII century for baroque guitar and theorbo. Their recordings are richly varied, well researched and highly regarded.
They are the Editors of the “SoloDuo Collection” for the Canadian publisher Productions d’Oz.
Matteo resides in Geneva, Switzerland, where he teaches at the Conservatoire Populaire. Lorenzo lives in Milan, Italy, and teaches at the University School of Music in Lugano, Switzerland. Since 2015, they have been Artists in Residence at the University of Colorado Boulder.
